Cute Projects from “Holiday Celebrations” by Pat Sloan and Prizes!

You can believe I was OVER. THE. MOON. when Pat Sloan, a world famous author, pattern designer, fabric designer, quilt designer, podcaster, YouTuber…well she’s a SUPER HERO to our quilting world… Whew, where was I? Oh yes! She asked me if I’d like to be part of her book tour when she released her new book Holiday Celebrations published by Martingale! I jumped up from the computer, danced around the house, and couldn’t wait to find hubs and give him the great news! I looked at all the other superstars in the quilting industry who were also on her book tour and I nearly fell out of my chair. I’ve had their fabric, patterns, and books on my shelves and have followed their blogs for years. To even be counted in their elite group, I was humbled and honored.

This book has 17 different projects in it for just about every holiday of the year. Change up your fabrics and you can make a couple of them again and again for different seasons. Wouldn’t the cover glorious patriotic quilt be incredible with a black background, red and green stars, and red/white striped fabric around the sides for candy cane ribbons? Delightful! The pattern design of that quilt is so versatile I just love it.

This book has the cutest projects in it and I immediately searched for an applique project that I could make using Simply Applique software and my embroidery machine. I chose the Bunny Hop Pillow and the Treat Totes. Images below courtesy of Martingale Publishing.

For Bunny Hop, I chose this too-cute-for-words fabric called Hippity Hoppity of Kanvas Fabrics for Benartex. Adorbs! This would be precious in a baby’s room at Easter. I cut the applique pieces for all of these projects on my cutting machine and all the stippling around the applique was done by machine embroidery on my sewing/embroidery machine combo. I love to finish my projects with machine embroidery. There’s an instant gratification factor that is just so satisfying. Here’s a video where I show an automated process to stitch around applique after the fact. https://youtu.be/yuKef6xhiR4

The Treat Totes were a delight to make with “A Haunting We Will Glow” fabric by Shelly Comiskey for Henry Glass Fabrics. These fully lined totes are very straight-forward and are super easy and quick to make. You’ll be whipping them out in no time! See how spooky the ghosts and skeletons are when they glow green? EEEEK! 🙂
