Oh goodness this quilt is ADORABLE! Want to use your ScanNCut and embroidery machine to do it with me using my Snapplique™ method? I can’t wait! There’s a video down below to give you an idea of what Snapplique™ is all about. I’ll be showing how to create embroidery applique designs from a paper applique quilt pattern. Regardless of the largest hoop you have, you’ll need to do multi-hoopings to make these blocks. With that said, this quilt can be made with a 6×10 if that is the largest you have. I’ll show in the intro video how to downsize designs so you can make the quilt the way you want if you’d like it to be smaller than the pattern calls for.
I will do a pre-recorded video for each block that will be released on my YouTube channel, Power Tools With Thread, starting on Aug 12, 2024. You’ve got plenty of time to gather your supplies listed below. If this is new to you, recommend spacing out the purchases so it’s not such a shock to your poor wallet all at once. However, the supplies below are in quantities that I buy so that I have them on-hand as needed when the urge hits. That’s important, right? Here’s what you’ll need to do this project using my Snapplique™ method:
SUPPLIES: Of course, if you already have a stock of this you don’t need to purchase more. I’ve linked to products in the amounts that I buy to have on-hand in my studio. These are either in my Amazon store (meaning I use them and can vouch for their effectiveness) or I’ve linked to other vendors who can provide them.
- The pattern is a download. Get the pattern here.
- The fabric kit or you can source your own fabrics.
- HeatNBond Lite
- For hoops with one side larger than 12″ – 15″ wide no show cut away mesh
- For hoops with one side smaller than 12″ – 12″ wide no show cut away mesh
- White embroidery bobbins – Brother/Baby Lock (Size 15 Class A), or Fil-Tec Magnetic (Size L)
- Pellon’s SF101 on the background fabric if you plan to do a satin stich outline for each piece. If you’re doing a blanket stitch, then SF101 is not needed.
EQUIPMENT: My videos will be using the equipment listed below. If you’d like to use a Cricut or Silhouette cutting machine, it can be done but I’m not sure how, so you’ll have to research that on your own. If you have the older CM model of the ScanNCut (SNC), you can still do this, but you’ll need to be sure to test your cut depth. Once you get it set, it will be smooth sailing from there because all the cuts will be the same depth. You do NOT need a Brother embroidery machine to use the Brother ScanNCut listed below.
- Brother ScanNCut. Here’s a blog post to help you decide which model to get.
- Brother SNC Scanning Mat – a 12″ scanning mat will work.
- Brother SNC Low Tack (Aqua/Teal) Mat – Recommend a 24″ mat if you can get it. A regular tack purple mat will work as well. I don’t recommend the gold fabric mat unless yours has zero stick left. HINT! If you have an SDX model, look for the letters “DX” in the code at the bottom of the mat. If you have a CM model, use a mat that has “CM” in the code at the bottom of the mat. THE MATS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE BETWEEN SNC MODELS.
- Brother SNC Standard Auto Black or Gold Blade. Again, look for DX or CM in the codes on the blades to make sure you’re getting the right one.
- You might want to use a Brother Rotary Cutting Blade (like me).
- Embroidery Machine. The smallest machine that can be used is a 6×10 hoop using multiple hoopings. Here’s another source for a machine – Mulqueen Sewing
- A Power Tools With Thread USB drive. You’ll need this to scan a .jpg file for design placement. Let’s keep everything together and in one spot on this USB.
EMBROIDERY SOFTWARE: Since I’m all about ease and simplicity, I’ll be using Embrilliance Embroidery software to make this quilt. Through July 24, 2024 use code HAPPYBDAY24 for 10% off your purchase. All high-end embroidery software (meaning it has the ability to digitize) can perform this process (like PE Design, PEP, Bernina, Pallette, Floriani, Embird, Hatch, etc.) so if you have that you can use it. However, I don’t know those versions of software so I can’t show you how to do what I’m doing with those. I have a playlist on my channel for BES / Simply Applique software to show how to do this using that software. If you purchased a high-end Brother embroidery machine, you may have received a copy of BES software with your purchase. Dig around and see if you can find it.
- Embrilliance Stitch Artist. I have Stitch Artist 3 (SA3) because it will reconstruct broken vector graphics with the click of a menu button, but you don’t need that if budget is an issue. However, you DO NEED SA2 in order to import that vector graphic created by the SNC. Note: If you already have SA1, there is an upgrade for SA1 to SA2 or SA1 to SA3 so be sure to look for the upgrade. You’ll also want Essentials and Thumbnailer if you don’t have them.
- Embrilliance Essentials. Essentials has the little scissor button to see what it will look like if you remove hidden stitches. I also love Essentials to color sort (in the Utility menu) so you can stich different placement lines at one time to minimize trips to the ironing station. For instance, you’ll want to stitch placement lines for multiple pieces that don’t overlap at once, then iron on both pieces at the same time, and then stitch the final blanket stitch on both pieces at once. Color sorting will do this for you so you don’t have to jump around with the Needle +/- button to move around the color stops.
- Embrilliance Thumbnailer. I think this is absolutely necessary. We’ll be making so many .fcm vector files and embroidery designs that it’s important you know what you’re looking at.
- Embrilliance Enthusiast. This is not necessary, but every once in a while, software will throw out some wonky stitches and the stitch editor in Enthusiast is so handy to fix those.
