Grandma’s Girl from Villa Rosa Designs

My layer cake of ‘Cozy Up’ by Corey Yoder for #Moda arrived and I couldn’t wait to cut into it. There’s something about the combo of colors in this fabric that just makes my heart happy. While I was at my local quilt store the other day, I picked up some additional yardage to use for making the samples I’d need at the 2021 Houston Quilt Festival. I was sure to get extra so that I’d have more for finishing when the layer cake arrived.

I wanted to use a pattern that would show off the gorgeous florals in this line and I wanted something fast and easy. ‘Grandma’s Girl’ from #VillaRosaDesigns was it! I love how VRD has an app that you can put on your phone to sort their myriad patterns into the fabric pre-cut type you have and then you see only those patterns that will work with your pre-cut. I sorted by 10″ Squares and found this gem.

I liked this pattern because it has large enough pieces so that the pretty floral design isn’t lost in the pattern.

I did use a 10″ square ruler to trim up my blocks and had a full pile of trimmings when I was finished. That’s important in this design so that you don’t have to fudge as much or miss your points on the HSTs (half square triangles). That was the hardest part of this pattern. It looks simplistic in the design, but when you sew the rows together, you’re sewing blind on every other point on the bottom fabric row.

I love how this turned out! It’s just beautiful…warm, happy, and cozy just like the name implies!

The extra yardage I chose was a tiny dot that reads like a solid. That is used for the top and bottom end pieces to even it all out.

I’m thinking this would be a great gift for my Aunt Pam in North Carolina. She has the prettiest little house full of charm and warmth and this would be gorgeous for her. I think she’ll love it.

Now to choose a pattern for the longarm. I’ve been picking up some very pretty patterns here and there throughout the year. December is when I usually will clear off the longarm table and get those flimsies quilted.

I chose the Grey Skies floral for the backing. This fabric is simply YUMMY!! It’s the reason I bought the line.

I chose the Green Buffalo Check that I’ll cut on the diagonal for a binding.

I can’t wait to get this on the longarm!
