Free Sewing Machine SVG

My gift to you. Feel free to use this to your heart’s content. I uploaded it to the Brother Canvas Cloud, resized, and cut out using my Brother Scan n Cut. Then I stitched it on using Simply Applique software – a module of BES4 that can be purchased separately. Bag instructions are below. I had some canvas laying around so I put it to good use! My original thought was to also applique the “Happiness is…” lettering but decided that it was too small. However, you can have that svg as well if you like. I ended up just embroidering the letters. The font is 1″ Evangeline from Designs by JuJu. The heart is a shape from the Canvas cloud or you can use one that’s inside the Scan N Cut. In the video, I used two different software programs because I prefer to do embroidery lettering in Embrilliance and use BX fonts. There are fonts in Simply Applique (BES4) but I didn’t care for those.

There were issues with being able to access the svg files from inside the Word document for my viewers, so…$300 later for a WordPress upgrade (just throw money at it, right?) I’ve created individual download files for the svg’s. So ignore the part in the video about moving the files from the Word doc to your computer. Just click the Download buttons below and they will be in your Downloads folder.

The tote bag was very straight forward and I pulled the design and size from thin air. To sew the straps, I cut two 4″-wide strips that were approx 40 inches long. I ironed a crease down the center and then folded the sides into the center and stitched down each side 1/8″ from the edge.

The body of the bag is 16″ x 29″. (No reason for that odd number). I folded it in half widthwise and stitched up the side and bottom. I did the same for the lining but cut it to 15.5″ x 29″. After embroidering, I turned the lining right side out and tucked the outside of the bag inside out into the lining so the wrong sides of the bag were together. I folded over the top 1/2″ edge of the outside of the bag and matched up the side seams. I stitched in the handles at a 1/2″ seam allowance measuring in 3″ from the outer edges and turned the bag right side out.

Then I made sure the handles were straight from the top of the bag and stitched around again 1/8″ from the top. I used a 90/14 Schmetz jeans top stitch needle and Dual Duty jeans top stitching thread. I needed all the extra oomph to get through all those layers of canvas.

I appreciate you sending this design/instructions, but I am unable to open your icons at top of the page. I am using a MAC and it gives an error message.

Thanks for svg file, Becky. Cute idea. Buttons are terrific! BTW, Amazon and Hobby Lobby carry blank canvas tote bags all ready to embellish. Quick! Loved the BES tut. Very helpful. Thanks again and a very Happy New Year to you and your family. Gotta be better than 2020, eh?! 😍

Hi Becky, I have a question regarding the Simply Applique software, is it only for brother machines? I called Allbrands and was told would not work on my Babylock Destiny2. I’m not that computer literate. I wanted to purchase the software now I’m not sure.

    • Yes, the software will work with your Baby Lock. It doesn’t go on your embroidery machine. It goes on your computer laptop/desktop and it will save any files to .pes which you need. The person at the store didn’t know what they were talking about. I bought it at Allbrands and I use it on my Baby Lock Ellegante2 all the time. 🙂🙂

    • Cyn Forest says:

Hi Yolanda: BES4 (Simply Appliqué) is software. You can save the files you create/modify to ANY file extension. I have a BLDY2 also and save my files as PES. HTHs. Happy New Year.

Very cute file, and I thank you for the free download. I did want to mention that you could have turned your WordPress image into an svg file much easier than you did. I use Inkscape (also a free program like GIMP) and do what is called “trace bitmap” Lots of YouTube University videos to explain how to do that. But if you want to go an even easier route, just use an online conversion app. Simply Google “convert png to svg” or “convert jpg to svg” and you’ll find a whole list of online apps that can be used to convert a simple image like this one. I used to use CuteCutter before I learned how to use Inkscape.
And a bonus with Inkscape… there is actually an extension you can add to Inkscape called “Inkstitch”. It will allow you to create simple embroidery files for your sewing machine. And Inkscape can upload many embroidery file formats too that you could convert to an svg file to use on your cutting machine too.

    • Inkscape is next on my list of software to learn. On our cross-country trip this summer (2021) a lady in the shop “All Around Quilts” in Idaho was taking pics of paper applique quilt patterns, importing them into Inkscape, and within 5 mins, had created an outline cut file of each piece that was then sent to Google Drive and downloaded into two laser cutting machines to create all the cut fabric pieces (backed with an iron on) to include with their kits. It was fascinating. We have a Glowforge here at the house and it’s certainly something I could do if I wasn’t cutting pieces with my SNC. Since the Brother Canvas accepts .svg files, saving to svg in Inkscape, upload to Canvas, which then makes the .fcm file for use in Simply Applique… The possibilities are endless!
